Outbreak of Fair Fever rampant in Clatsop County

Carrie Bartoldus July 31, 2008

If you haven’t made it out to the Clatsop County fair yet, today’s a great day to go. Buddy Day is two for one day. Two for the price of one admission ticket, two for one on the carnival rides! And, as usual, the weather has decided to be contrary to the forecaster’s predictions showing nary a cloud or shower.

Wednesday events went off without a “hitch” and fair goers were treated to daylong entertainment on stage, and off. 4-H’ers and FFA members showed animals all day long, with many of them pulling double duty and rushing off to perform onstage, sweep stalls and lanes, answer questions from potential buyers for their auction animals. The one thing that won’t distract fair-goers (or their pocket books) are fair booths. Nary a one to spend your money on, except, of course the food booths. Ice cream, elephant ears, fajita’s and the 4-H kids “Chicken Coop” offer a variety of foods. There is also seafood, Asian food, funnel cake and your usual cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers and curly fries!

Both indoor and outdoor arenas were in use as was the back range with archery competitions. Horsemanship, this year, had fierce competition as there are more horses this year than any previous year at the new fairgrounds.

Competitions continue with the kids tractor pull occurring daily and Saturday’s Cluck-off grilling competition. No professional chefs allowed, but all you backyard bar-b-quers are encouraged to take Commissioner Samuelson up on her challenge to beat her winning team!

Evening Talent Show
The competition on stage was quite competitive, as well, and the crowd was well rewarded with an two hour show where they were treated to everything from a six year old belting out to gymnastic feats extraordinaer to a ventriloquist act and jazzy dance. First place in the adult division went to “Just Justin” who wrote Something Beautiful “just for this fair” about two days before the competition. Justin Samson said he won the competition two years ago, too, and is delighted that he will be going to the state fair to compete for the grand prize. Last night Samson won $200 and says he is making some good money with his music having played the weekend before at the Lughnasa Festival. First place in the Junior division went to Alaina Meyer and Hannah Garhofer for their dance/aerobic duet. They are excited to be representing Clatsop County at the State Fair and can’t wait to go to Salem and perform for the crowds down there. Fairground’s manager, Gary Freedman, said next year there will probably be an additional breakdown in the age bracket as the competition for the Junior division pitted five year olds against seventeen year olds, which is a hard gap to bridge. All in all the talent show spotlighted the extraordinary abilities of a lot of local people, adults and children alike!
